Great discussion about the state of Black Greek Letter Organizations and the current pledging process. Much debate on whether we need to completely do away with pledging, or find some in between ground that limits physical harm and liability but still offers enough struggle to create a bond amongst members.
I wholeheartedly disagree with Ricky Jones argument as I feel that pledging is an essential part of joining a black fraternity or sorority. Having a completely paper process will allow anyone to walk in, breaking the sense of brotherhood and sisterhood created with traditional processes. Furthermore, the process is meant to build a person up, turn their perceived weaknesses to strengths and preparing them for the struggles that real life has to offer.
I agree, there needs to be more oversight to ensure that aspirants are being brought into the family correctly and are not at risk for permanent injury and moreover death. But straight up signing is not the answer. First, we need to be real about pledging. It exists, its not going anywhere and everyone knows. Next we need to agree upon acceptable methods of membership intake that does not eliminate breaking bread with future brothers or sisters and creates a sense of pride in the individual for joining an esteemed, not easily achieved organization.
For those with Mr. Jones idealogy, I suggest joining the NAACP or any other black oriented community organization if the rigors of BLGOs is too much.
Out of all the recruits, Grayson seem like his game has a lot of upside. He looks athletic superior, tight handle, decent vision and he can score.
